Yi Sun

was born in China and commenced her piano studies at the age of 6. At age 11 she won first prize in the CCTV Instruments Competition in China. Yi Sun entered the Si Chuan Conservatorium of Music at age 12, studying under Professor Bo Tang. After 5 years of studying she moved to Sydney and completed her Higher School Certificate followed by a Bachelor of Music degree and Master of Music degree (classical piano performance) at Australian Institute of Music (AIM) studying with Dr Wojciech Wisniewski and Dr Suzanna Hlinka. Yi Sun has participated in public masterclasses with Jonathan Biss, Dr Kirill Monorosi, Prof. Inge Rosar, Prof. Alexey Sokolov.

  • She often performs solo piano and ensemble concerts in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, St Andrews Cathedral, and at the Australian Institute of Music.
  • Solo performance of F. Liszt – II Hungarian Rhapsody at the Sydney Opera House as part of the 2012 “Encore” Concert Series.
  • 2nd Prize for Baroque section in the Sydney Eisteddfod. (2012)
  • 2nd Prize for Beethoven section of the Wollongong Eisteddfod. (2013)
  • Invitation from the Chinese Embassy to perform at China’s National Day in Canberra in 2013.
  • Finalist of the Piano Scholarship Solo section of the Wollongong Eisteddfod. (2013)
  • Encore Concerts award 2013, she performed a series of four solo recitals around Queensland.
  • Won First Prize in the Piano Duet (Open age) section with Aloysius Albert Oenaryo at the St George Eisteddfod. (2014)
  • Third Prize of Piano Concerto Competition in the Sydney Eisteddfod. (2015)

Yi Sun has 19 years’ performance experience, and 9 years’ teaching experience behind her, and is currently an academic lecturer (piano performance) at the Australian Institute of Music since 2014 and teaches all levels from high school to Bachelor of Music and Graduate Diploma. Her students successfully audition for tertiary courses at Australian Institute of Music, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and University of New South Wales, as well as obtain high certificates of AMEB. She is a full member of the Music Teacher’s Association of NSW.
